If you are a food lover, don’t miss this unique experience in Tokyo. Learn how to cook Shojin Ryori, traditional vegetarian cuisine, in a cooking class at Akasaka Teran, located on the grounds of Jokokuji Temple in the heart of Tokyo. Shojin Ryori (精進料理) is a traditional Japanese Buddhist cuisine that is entirely vegetarian and often vegan. It originated in Zen Buddhism, where monks follow a plant-based diet rooted in the principles of simplicity and mindfulness toward all living beings.
In this class, you will learn the fundamentals of Shojin Ryori and prepare your own meal, consisting of three dishes and one soup. Enjoy your self-cooked meal in the temple’s main hall, where you will also be served high-quality Japanese sake, rice wine, Matcha green tea, and Wagashi sweets for dessert.
With a history of about 350 years, Jokokuji Temple has witnessed many historical events, including the expansion of Edo Castle and the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Akasaka Teran is led by Ms. Risho Asao, an experienced temple monk and licensed dietitian, who teaches Shojin Ryori cooking classes both in Japan and abroad.
